Home – Whitney Houston

I really was looking for this song, because I felt that the lyrics really pertained to my posts this week on Self-Love … that this is how we should feel about ourselves … about being ourselves; in Love and with God … that THAT is HOME.  Then I stumbled across this Whitney Houston version, and I had to share it.

There’s a personal level to this.  You see, Whitney Houston was the one singer who inspired me to pursue a career in music.  There are certain people whom I credit for saving my life when I was that borderline suicidal teenager who just wanted to find hope … so desperately.  Whitney Houston, along with other singers like Paul Simon, or John Lennon, and many more … they gave me that hope.  When Whitney died this past year, I cried … partially because of all the memories I had of listening to her songs, and the hope that they gave me.  Mostly though, I cried because here was a pure, beautiful, and radiant soul … who never really learned how to love herself.  That is the importance of loving yourself.

Largely because of those singers who gave me hope, I made the decision that I wanted to do the same thing with my life … to pursue a career in music.  Like the psychiatric patient who goes into psychology :-), I threw myself into the music world … and have had amazing experiences that I will treasure for my whole life.  What I really was trying to do though … was to find that place … that place that was Home.

That place can really only be found within yourself … when you are able to receive God’s love for who you are.  You are beautiful … no matter where you go, what you do, how old you get, how young you are, what color of skin you have, what person you love … you are beautiful – and God LOVES you.

THAT – is Home.

Home

From The Wiz – By Charlie Smalls

When I think of home
I think of a place where there’s love overflowing
I wish I was home
I wish I was back there with the things I been knowing

Wind that makes the tall trees bend into leaning
Suddenly the snowflakes that fall have a meaning
Sprinklin’ the scene, makes it all clean

Maybe there’s a chance for me to go back there
Now that I have some direction
It would sure be nice to be back home
Where there’s love and affection
And just maybe I can convince time to slow up
Giving me enough time in my life to grow up
Time be my friend, let me start again

Suddenly my world has changed it’s face
But I still know where I’m going
I have had my mind spun around in space
And yet I’ve watched it growing

If you’re list’ning God
Please don’t make it hard to know
If we should believe in the things that we see
Tell us, should we run away
Should we try and stay
Or would it be better just to let things be?

Living here, in this brand new world
Might be a fantasy
But it taught me to love
So it’s real, real to me

And I’ve learned
That we must look inside our hearts
To find a world full of love

Religion4All is an idea: that every human being (no matter their race, religion, sexuality, social status, lifestyle, or any other possible factor) is LOVED by God; just … as … they are.

We all are loved by God, and NO religion or person has a monopoly on it. Every single person on this planet is loved equally by God … SO many are cut off from God because they are told they don’t belong. God loves everyone … we ALL are beautiful creations … we don’t need to cringe when we hear the words “God”, or “religion”, or their judgments … God LOVES us all!

There is no requirement to change in order to be LOVED by God, or to LOVE God. God is LOVE, and LOVE is God … period. There is no one who God loves more than anyone else … there are only those who choose to LOVE more … to love God more, and consequently then to love each other more. In doing so, we grow closer to God … and know God.

By opening our hearts, and minds to God (free of boundaries like religion, or social trends); by LOVING God … we are exactly where we are meant to be. If we maintain that openness, never allowing any person or event to make us close our hearts, we will be guided by God to be who we are meant to be.

In that space of openness we can then live a life of LOVE, and be guided to where we are meant to be … forever in LOVE.

Yes, what an inspiration she was and is to so many people. A beautiful gifted soul who shared.

Yes, and so sad that somebody so gifted could not figure out how to love herself … like so many, she became consumed with trying to escape, rather than doing the inner work to allow herself to be filled with God’s love for her, and making that Love her own. Tragic.

She was a fantastic artist. Touching to see how much she inspired you.

What kind of music do you write/perform?

I began in high school with church music, and wanted to become a singer/songwriter as an adult. I later received classical training and so have been in that field for the past decade. I currently am waiting on God to see where I am supposed to go … whether I am supposed to continue in music, or move into whatever God calls me to. Whatever I do, for the rest of my life, it will be where I feel prompted to go by God … instead of trying to impose my own will upon the world. It will be curious … a Divine adventure.

Wow, that’s so cool. I was always involved in music throughout school- playing the flute and piano (not very good though!). My best friend trained in singing classically and now sings in an opera company.

I really hope you find your niche with the music. I wish I could sing really well! It’s so nerve-wrecking too!

Omg you wouldn’t believe the timing on this post. Well, yes you would. Thank you for sharing. — Whitney was a beautiful woman, and this is an absolutely beautiful song. (But in my mind, I still hear Diana Ross’ voice.)

I hear Diana Ross too :-), this version is a bit too … not the way the music was written for me (lol). However, when I saw/heard it, especially with her being SO young, and you can really FEEL what she put into her singing … I had to post it instead of Diana … just because of the personal element that Whitney has had in my life. I truly believe that I would have given in to those suicidal thoughts as a teenager … if not for the singers who gave me hope, and an outlet to sing along with … that is the whole reason I wanted to be in music … to give other people that Hope. Whether it is in music or in some other way, I know that will be integral to what God has for me in the future … it has been a core issue for me for too long to not be … to give hope to the hopeless.

[…] when you think of the beautiful artists we have lost … I suppose my post on Whitney (“Home – Whitney Houston“) brought this about.  So many deep souls who get overwhelmed, and flame out.  It’s […]
